Very enjoyable book with wonderful writing. I wanted to read it slowly to take it all in. Yes, there were a few weak parts. I felt Mitzy's character should have been developed a little more to have had her read some books or magazines to incorporate some knowledge of the clothes and places she went. How would she know about high heels and stockings if not from magazines. The issue of clothing should have been addressed earlier than after being in Morocco. The family would have known that a wool skirt is not suitable and would have given her something to wear sooner. Little things like that annoyed me but on the whole it was an intriguing and interesting story that kept one guessing throughout how the book would end. I will definitely keep up with the author's books. I love the stories that look back on someone's life and show why they ended up the way they did. Looking at the little girl turned into an elderly woman with pains and regrets is so true to life and makes one think about their own life as well as those we do not understand around us.

A Half Forgotten Song mainly follows a relatively young painter/gallery owner/writer/father/whatever else he's up to as he tries to find out more information about his favorite artist.

The beginning of the story is, frankly, boring. It does serve as a set up for the rest of the book, but it could have been shorter and more to the point. The whole side story about the main character and his daughter felt pretty unnecessary, since he barely ever mentions her again in the book, and she's really not part of the plot.

When the main character gets to his destination to begin research on his favorite artist, the book begins to pick up. He meets all sorts of characters, including several that the artist he's researching painted.

The best part of the book, by far, are the sections where the story goes back in time. These parts are very detailed, in a good way, and the characters seem to pop more than the present day characters. There are lots of twists and turns, and most of them are not predictable at all.

The present day sections of the book, however, are very predictable up until the end. You can easily figure out several of the mysteries, but I was pleasantly surprised that their motives are not necessarily in your face.

This is a very enjoyable book, although some parts of it are better than others. Still, the author does a wonderful job of tying everything together, and while the ending is a bit far fetched, it's still somehow believable.
This novel is an unforgettable character study of Mitzi Hatcher. It is the portrait of what lonelinee and emotional abuse can drive the human psyche to do.

It begins when
Mitzi is fourteen and living an isolated and indescribably lonely existence. Her mother and the people who live near her are incredibly cruel to Mitzi. The remainder of the novel follows Mitzi as she develops an unhealthy, obsessive attachment to Charles Aubrey,a man who shows her some attention and friendship.. The story follows her all the way through her old age. My heart ached for Mitzi and by the end of this well written novel I understood why she did some of the astounding things she did in the novel. It is well worth your time to read what this obsession does to all their lives. You will never forget the character of Mitzi Hatcher. Read this one!
I read the Unseen and loved it; so I couldn't wait to read another book by Ms Webb. More than halfway into this book and I could barely force myself to continue reading. With the exception of Zach, the characters are not very likeable. The story feels forced with a lot of filler. It takes so long to get going that I finally skipped to the end. Mitzy is described as an innocent, but she's actually a horrible person. I really wanted a little more justice for the lives she ruined. Why anyone would keep her secrets is beyond me. If you are so bored that you have nothing better to do, then I would recommend this book. Otherwise, keep looking or give her book the Unseen a try. I think this could have been a really great story if she had flushed out the characters a little more and shortened it by about 100 pages. Where was her editor?!?
Dimity/Mitzy is an unreliable narrator but I don’t think it is in a mean spirited way, I believe it is her story completely from her point of view, even though that view is skewed, compared to how other people remember it. She never knew any kindness in this world so of course she would fall in love with the first person that showed it to her.

The back and forth in time worked very well, as Zach tries to find out the truth about artist Charles Aubrey but what he finds in Mitzy is not what he expected to find and can she be believed? Mitzy’s story was so fascinating and made even more so as realize what an unreliable narrator she is but you can’t help but fall in love with her either, at least I couldn’t, I felt she was stuck in this time, I don’t believe she ever really matured past this point in her life and it made me sad for her and just want to hug her.

I really liked the way the author told this story with this air of mystery as you try to figure out just how much of Dimity’s story is the truth and how much is pure fantasy. Zach was an interesting character too as he tries to figure out not only what to do with his own life but to find out what his real connection is to the famous artist. Mitzy’s mother is a piece of work who I just wanted to slap, the way she treats Mitzy is just awful she is a very unlikable person, and maybe Mitzy wouldn’t have been so in need of love, attention and normalcy if she had been even a decent mother. There are hints of gothic fiction here but I wouldn’t categorize it as such all the characters are fully fleshed out and truly “alive”.

I have enjoyed Webb’s other two books and this one did not disappoint I highly recommend all of her books! I couldn’t put this book down I feel it is a must read but be prepared for some late nights and characters that will stay with you long after you are finished!
