I first tried reading this series years ago when it was initially being released in the individual volumes, but I couldn't quite get into it. Now, when technology and the individual's obsession with it is more prevalent than it was even just ten years ago, I'm absolutely blown away by this story! Although the overall story itself is fairly light-hearted with plenty of innuendo and sexual references for humor, the concept of how people come to rely on the persocoms and the use of the storybook series to emphasize how much people rely on their technology instead of interacting with one another brought such depth to this manga. The first volume naturally ends at a cliffhanger and I can't wait to get my hands on volume two! This is such a powerful statement about our reliance on technology, I can't wait to see where the story predicts we'll end.

As usual, CLAMP's art is incredibly beautiful.

Downside, as other reviewers mentioned, is the packaging of the omnibus edition. It is entirely too thick - the whole time I was reading it, I was worried that the spine would crack.

Warning: there are a lot of sexual references and some nudity that would make this series unsuitable for younger readers. Older teen and up.

Chobits Volume 1 Clamp Shirley Kubo Jake Forbes 9781931514927 Books Reviews

There are real boys and girls, but the computers have been turned into persocom, humanoid computers (with huge ears that look like they came from giant rodents). There are full size ones, plus PDAs and even cute laptops. They do everything from search the web, calculate sales, type, remember phone numbers, act as maids and even wink-wink-nudge-nudge, if you know what I mean.
Hideki is too poor to buy a persocom, but he ends up finding it in the trash and now must figure out where she is from and who made her and WHAT is she. It seems she is not just a normal, run-of-the-mill persocom.
I love Plum, the cute tiny laptop. She dances when nobody is using her, kind of a persocom verison of screen saving, and says, "Okey Dokey".
The best part of CLAMP manga is that all these sexy female characters and, the story itself, was created by a female group, four writers and artists, so it's OK for males to drool over it!
Bought these a while ago and haven't reviewed yet so,
This is an amazing series and I highly recommend them!!! I wasn't sure about the story line at first, but grew to love it quickly since it was so different in some respects and was a very entertaining read. This is a good anime as well although this gives it a little more depth naturally. I liked having many parts in this one book however the only problem is that it does wrinkle on the spine afterwards and it is a fairly wide spine to keep open. Other than that there were no problems inside the book. The color images that were included were a nice touch!
I love the books made by Clamp. First half of series. It's the standard manga height, but it's kinda hard to read because it's pretty thick.
Traditional right to left manga reading. If you don't want the hassle of collecting all eight books, this reprint is the one you want with only 2 books to collect.
"Chobits" is one of the best manga I've ever read. Everything about it is entertaining and beautiful.

The story is about Hideki Motosua, a ronin(high school graduate enrolled in a type of school that helps you get into college) and the persecom(humanoid computer) he finds in the trash, Chi. At first, Chi is totally ignorant of the world around her, and it's up to Hideki to teach her. As the story progresses, however, Chi becomes more self-sufficient. She is very mysterious. Where did she come from, and how is she able to function without an operating system? The other characters are done well too, each with their own stories. One of the major themes in the series is whether a machine can feel love, and most of the characters have to deal with this question in one way or another. Persecoms are so human like, people often have feelings for them, but can the persecoms love them back? And what of the rumors about Chobits, a series of Persecoms that have feelings and free will? This theme is done well in the story. It is serious, but at the same time the manga doesn't become too focused on it that the rest of the story suffers. There is a fair amount of fan-service in this manga, so it's not something for children. I didn't really like that part because Chi is so child-like, it seems kind of wrong.

The art is beautiful in "Chobits". Chi is absolutely adorable, and all the characters are beautifully drawn. There is a lot of attention to detail in the clothes and scenery too.

The themes in "Chobits" are done in other manga, but I have never read another quite like it. The main theme intertwines itself very well with the mystery of Chi's past, which alone is enough to keep you hooked.

"Chobits" is a must-read for any manga fan. No collection is complete without it.
