These books were written in the mid-late 90's, in a better literary time. You see- nowadays no one can write a standalone book. Everything has to be either a trilogy or a saga, but they end up just stretching an idea or two LONG past it's prime so that they can juice audiences. This Quartet was written in a better time, for a better purpose, and in a better way. The 'Introduction' to Ender's Game is actually quite gripping, and deserves to be read and understood for what it is. Card's literary career hasn't had quite the prestige and notoriety of Asimov or Herbert, but the man can write a story that will keep you gripped. I read these books ten years ago, and I was THRILLED to see that Ender's Game got a film adaptation (it wasn't bad, but fans will walk away a little perturbed…).

Long story short- if you like to read, then you should get this boxed set. Watch how easily you end up flipping those pages, and how you walk away after each book with so many ideas in your head. There's substance here, and you won't have to wade through layers of dense prose or obscure references in order to appreciate it. No one can say that Card 'dumbs it down', but what he does is craft a tale in an accessible manner that people will be able to relate to from their own experiences.

I haven't read much scifi in recent years. When I first encountered Ender's Game, I was just amazed that a very serious and challenging book like this was being read (and stolen in great numbers from libraries) by very young people. An essay in the first book of this edition explains why. This novel rates 5 stars, but since I was just plain bored by Children of The Mind, the package gets downgraded, but the box set is a great value. Since my peculiar reading strategy is to save some books of a series, so that I have some left to enjoy in the future, I can't comment on the middle two. AFTER you have read Ender's Game. a MUST read is Ender's Shadow. Bean is a significant character in Ender's Game, but this is Bean's childhood and it is a knockout. The cast ranges from saintly to satanic and Bean himself is a masterly convincing and complex creation. To me this is the compelling gem of the series. I would also recommend the Marvel graphic renderings but, again, after reading the originals.
I bought this series on a suggestion by and for a friend. It was a gift so I hope she didn't mind my reading them prior to wrapping them up.
I wasn't expecting much but as I got into them I was hooked. The stories are well written and developed with very good pacing. I admired the imagination which went into the books as they took my mind on a visual feast that, although they aren't an "I couldn't put it down"type of read, made certain I would complete each one.
I would recommend this for those who like a good read and can put aside all rationalization and just enjoy the trip.
I am a retired sailor. The Ender Quartet should be required reading for all military leaders nomcoms and officers. Author Card captures the essence of leadership trust, confidence, and commitment in "Ender's Game"; and the personal consequences of war, the fragility of racial tolerance and compassion, and the ghosts that haunt veterans (many for the balance of their lives) in "Speaker for the Dead", "Xenocide". and "Children of the Mind".

I read each of the eight books that today comprise the Ender's Quartet and the Ender Shadow series, book by book, as they were first published, in the last quarter of the 1900's; many of them in my bunk, braced against rolling seas.

Spurred by Card's most recent "Ender in Exile"--a gift from a friend--I purchased both the Quartet, and the Shadow series, and read each anew, certainly, with different eyes than the first reading. I suggest that Orson Scott Card has taken a seat along side Asimov, Hienlien, and Clark. Be you veteran, neophyte, pacifist, activist, monk, clergy, healer, historian, leader, follower, or dreamer of better worlds there is something in the Quartet for all of us.
I read this series the first time when I was in high school (about 14 years ago) and have borrowed it from friends and the library enough times that I figured it was time to purchase it. I like this box set because its the original cover art and packaging for the Ender stories. I could go and review each one of these books separately but they would've all gotten 5 stars anyway so the overall rating still works for me.

If you're a fan of literary sci-fi (not exactly high octane action) then I would definitely give this series a try. There are multiple different sci-fi subjects explored here and the series also spans many many many years so expect each book to pick up exactly where the last left off.
Orson Scott Card tends to wax poetic and philosophical in his novels, but he does so in a natural way that really makes the characters come to life. Not only that, but he's got a fair hand at one-liners that makes the characters lovingly endearing. I would recommend these books based on the progression of character and story that really sinks the reader into a full on reality not so different from our own. I've read and reread the books over the last decade and it never gets boring.
Love it, great writing style, so entertaining. From beginning to end it keeps you captured, makes you think about humanity. Only 1 of the books startedof a bit slow, but it also gets great after a while. Now this is definitely not only for teens, I am 43 and could not put the books down. The series was so good that I also bought Enders Shadow and that series might even be better. So if you love to read and are into fiction, just like an easy, entertaining book sometimes that still talks about interesting things, this is for you.
